A tow truck lost its brakes and rolled backward down Salisbury Street Friday afternoon, causing a multi-vehicle incident at the intersection of Salisbury and Garden Streets in Little Falls.

According to witnesses, the tow truck was traveling uphill when it lost control and began moving in reverse with a large white pickup truck secured on its flatbed. The vehicle struck a tree and a fire hydrant before coming to a stop on the sidewalk. The pickup truck then rolled off the flatbed and into the middle of Garden Street.

The collision caused the fire hydrant to rupture, sending water gushing into the street until the City Water Department was able to shut it off.

Police closed the area while crews worked to clear the scene. The Department of Public Works removed the damaged tree and shoveled debris from the roadway. No injuries were reported.
