In May 2026, the Newport Town Board approved a Town Trail Development Project to complete preliminary planning and engineering for an accessible, multi-use trail system on 60 acres of Town-owned land in Newport adjacent to the Town offices and along the West Canada Creek. The planning process will start in August and end in December. The main goal of the project is to produce a final report that documents the planning process, technical findings, conceptual recommendations, implementation strategy, and supporting graphics to help the Town apply for construction funding in 2027.
To help guide this effort, the Town has hired Barton & Loguidice, D.P.C., a professional planning and engineering team with extensive experience in trails and park planning, public engagement, and implementation strategy. This planning project is funded through the Town’s Town Parks and Trails Reserve Fund and will not involve new taxes or borrowing.
“Our agricultural areas, wooded spaces, and the West Canada Creek are some of what makes Newport so special. This project strives to create a place where everyone can explore and enjoy them,” said Town Supervisor Nathaniel Lowell. “An accessible and well-planned trail system expands recreational opportunities and opens nature to people who may not otherwise have access to it.”
The Town-owned property associated with this project includes a mix of agricultural fields, wooded river corridor areas, drainage features, and natural open space. The planning process will help the Town look carefully at how to organize these features into a trail network with park spaces that are practical, accessible, sensitive to the environment, and responsive to the needs of the community.
There will be opportunities for residents, nearby property owners, and other stakeholders to participate, share ideas, and help guide the planning effort. Residents’ input will be valuable as the Town considers trail routing, access, destination points, and amenities. These opportunities will be announced in the coming months.
