LITTLE FALLS, NY – Aiden Streeter hit two home runs – one of them a grand slam – but five errors did the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs in on Sunday, losing 15-13 to Utica.
Utica got on the board first on a bloop RBI single to left field by Anthony Perritano, scoring Kevin Francella (William and Mary) and Michael Flashner (Staten Island). They tacked on another with a throwing error by the Mohawk Valley catcher in the second, scoring Caleb Miller (Union).
Francella brought home Jack McWilliams with an RBI double in the second before a home run by Jack Sweeney brought both of them home.
Jaden Santiago (Columbia) got the Diamond Dawgs on the board with a hot grounder off the Utica third baseman’s glove and into left field. That hit scored Aiden Streeter (AIU) and Jake Dolan (Seton Hall). Kyle Coleman (Belmont) followed that up with the same hit into left field, scoring Santiago and Ryan Paine (Fairfield). Connor Scanlan cut the lead to one by scoring Jake Haarde (Fairfield) on an RBI single.
That was before Streeter hit a towering grand slam to give the Diamond Dawgs a three-run lead into the third.
RJ Thomae cut the lead back to two on a ground rule double, scoring Connor Jones (George Washington) from second. Jack Sweeney (Rutgers) gave the Blue Sox the lead back on a three-run double to left field. Utica scored another five in the inning to take a six-run lead into the fourth.
Alfonso took Mohawk Valley to double digits on an RBI single in the fourth to score Scanlan.
Coleman came home in the fifth on a wild pitch, where the score would stay until the sixth. That was when Alfonso hit his second home run of the game, slamming a ball to the top row of the center field bleachers.
Streeter cut the lead to two in the seventh, knocking Dolan in with an RBI double to center field. But that was as close as they would get, as they were shut out in the last two innings to be saddled with their 21st loss of the season.
Nolan Gillis picked up the loss for Mohawk Valley.
The Diamond Dawgs will be back at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Thursday when they host the Boonville Lumberjacks.
