LITTLE FALLS, NY – The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs made sure on Friday that if they were going to go out, they were going to go out with everyone smiling. A four-run third held up for Mohawk Valley as they held off Glens Falls, 5-4, in their last home game of the season.
Glens Falls jumped into the lead in the second, with an RBI single by Alex Landau (Siena), scoring Will Rudolph (Sacred Heart).
Aiden Streeter (American International) tied up the score in the bottom of the inning, sending a slick ball into the gap to score Roberto Valdes Jr. (St. John’s).
Streeter’s teammate at American International, Wesley Alfonso, gave the Diamond Dawgs the lead in the third, bringing home two on an RBI double to left field. The very next batter – Valdes – extended the lead by bringing home Alfonso on a looping RBI single to center field. Valdes ultimately came home on an errant throw by Billy Barthel (Wagner).
A sacrifice fly by Tyler McKillop (UMass Lowell) and an RBI single by Jack Rigabar cut the lead to just two in the sixth.
Rigabar brought the lead back down to one with an RBI single in the eighth that scored Jack Ploppert (Eckerd). That was as close as the Dragons would get, however, as Caden Wells (Trinity) struck out the last three Glens Falls Dragons he saw to earn the save.
Colin Kroner (Seton Hall) picked up the win, while Barthel got the loss for Glens Falls.
The win keeps Mohawk Valley a half game behind fourth-place Oneonta for the final playoff spot. They will head to Saugerties for the season finale on Saturday, then will be watching intently as Oneonta ends its season on Sunday with a game against the Boonville Lumberjacks
