Animal advocates have launched the March for Animals, a 207-mile journey to raise awareness about animal testing and demand a transition to modern, non-animal research.

The night before the March launched in Albany, activists attended a pre-screening of “The New Gold Standard” documentary before its official release. The 2026 documentary explores cutting-edge, human-based methods like organ chips, organoids, and AI models that have been found to be more effective, superior methods and stand to replace animal testing in biomedical research. The event featured a Q&A with Emmy Award-winning Director and Producer Steven Latham and writer and journalist Melanie D.G. Kaplan, author of “Lab Dog.”

The March officially launched from the New York State Capitol in Albany on Saturday, September 12, 2026 calling for an end to animal testing. Since then Marchers have been making their way across the state on a 207-mile journey from Albany toward Rochester, culminating at Marshall BioResources, the largest facility for lab animal breeding and training in the country.

Organizers are calling for an end to animal testing and for the release of animals held at the facility, including more than 16,000 beagles and more than 40,000 other animals, according to the organizers.

WHY IT MATTERS: SUPERIOR SCIENCE EXISTS NOW

“We don’t have to choose between scientific progress and compassion,” organizers say. “We can have science without suffering.”

Organizers challenge the public to Google or ask AI, are there better, more effective, scientific methods than animal testing the answer is: “Yes. For many areas of biomedical research and safety testing, there are now methods that can be more human-relevant—and in some cases more predictive—than traditional animal testing. The important scientific caveat is that no single alternative can replace every animal study today. The strongest approach is usually a combination of human-based methods, rather than simply substituting one test for one animal experiment. The FDA itself is now explicitly moving in this direction. Its current guidance says that New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) can provide more human-relevant information and may achieve drug-safety goals more effectively and efficiently than traditional animal testing. Just ask Google or AI for yourselves and do the research.

The March to Abolish Animal Testing is calling for taxpayer-funded research dollars to be redirected toward modern, human-relevant, non-animal research technologies that organizers say can provide better scientific models while eliminating the suffering of laboratory animals.
